Red Slip Ware from Production Contexts in Mishrifeh/Qatna (Syria): A Different Point of View

Abstract

Mishrifeh, ancient Qatna, was excavated most recently from 1999 to 2010. The Italian team from the University of Udine excavated various areas of the site and uncovered Iron Age contexts, particularly domestic and productive ones. This paper will discuss a specific production of the Iron Age pottery, namely the Red Slip Ware (RSW). The RSW, due to its appearance, similar to that of metallic vessels, has usually been considered a luxury product, perhaps with symbolic meaning. However, at Mishrifeh it has been found, for the moment, especially in production contexts. The contribution will hypothesise possible functions that red-slipped vessels may have had in these spaces, suggesting that this production served a broader range of purposes than is generally thought
