Searching for the location of theancient city of Akkade in relation to the ancient course of the Tigris using historical and GIS analyses

Abstract

This study identifies the most plausible candidate ancient sites for the ancient city of Akkade. A combination of historical geographical approach and geographical information system (GIS) analysis is employed to seek and define a regional location of Akkade drawing on some qualified pieces of relevant topographical information contained in written sources. The precise location of Akkade cannot be determined ; however, it can be identified in broad terms with certainty. Accordingly, a distribution map of some qualified candidates for the ancient site of Akkade in this given region is drawn to identify suitable candidate ancient sites considering their sizes and dates. The same historical geographical approach with the same GIS analysis is used to elucidate the presence of a close positional relationship between the ancient city of Akkade and the ancient course of the Tigris. Based on this, the most plausible candidate sites for the ancient city of Akkade are identified in relation to the positional relationship of the qualified candidate ancient sites of Akkade along both banks of the reconstructed ancient course of the Tigris.
