The beginning of Urartian archaeological research: the rock-cut tomb and bronze finds from Alisar/Verahram, Iran

Abstract

The rock-cut tomb at Alisar, on the River Araxes, was discovered in 1859 and it is still one of the most interesting Urartian sites. The purpose of this contribution is to analyse the information available on this site and on the objects found there; the tomb, indeed, throws light on the problem of Urartian presence in the north-western Iran, which is at times considered to be outside the borders of Urartu. This analysis permits to consider the Alisar tomb as a frontier contest, as unequivocally Urartian elements are found together with provincial features.
