Mazi-Karḫuḫa, King of Karkemiš and Hittite Syria at the end of the 13th century
Abstract
The letter JA 303 from the Middle Euphrates is concerned with a legal case, whose verdict was pronounced by a king named Maziya. The present paper argues that this King Maziya and King Mazi-Karuhuha mentioned in the Hieroglyphic Luwian inscription engraved on the Ankara Silver Bowl (ankara 2), are one and the same individual, and that this king was a king of Karkemis. We will examine each of these sources separately, and then use them jointly in order to discuss the dating and context of the activity of King Mazi-Karhuha. On the basis of our conclusion, we will discuss the chronological and historical repercussions of this identification in Hittite Syria at the end of the 13th century BC.
