Abstract

The Laws of Ur-Namma (also called Codex Ur-Namma) is a Sumerian law collection promulgated by Ur-Namma, the founder of the Ur III Dynasty. The study of this collection, still being the oldest one found from the Ancient Near East, has greatly advanced in the past few years due to the publication of a new and immensely significant Ur III copy. Codex Ur-Namma, Article 39 which will be examined here, deals with the usurpation of agricultural land. The author believes that the context of this problem has not been properly investigated and this, in spite of several attempts at translation, has kept its legal significance hidden. Comparative data from the Ancient Near East and also Islamic area will help to further explore the complexities of this Sumerian law.
