L'épiphanie divine en Mésopotamie à travers le terres cuites

Abstract

Several Mesopotamian terracotta models or reliefs represent a divinity at the gate of the temple. Most of them have been discovered in private houses. Small changes in representation distinguish the reliefs from the models, but are assigned to different workshops, - one in Nippur, one in Isin, and one in Babylon. The strong persistence of the subject into the Ur III/Old Babylonian period underscores its importance in the context of private cult. The analysis of these cult images raises again the question of the identity of divinities (main deity or popular deity) and points out the differences in relationship with the divine in conformity with the choice of a representation in two or three dimensions.
