Transformation of the Mesopotamian Banquet Scene into the Presentation Scene in the Early Dynastic, Akkadian and Ur III Periods

Abstract

A study of the iconography of banquet, contest and presentation scenes depicted on Mesopotamian seals of the 3rd millennium BC has led to the suggestion that over the course of the period the banquet theme evolved into that of the presentation. Should this idea be established, it would be justified to some extent to conclude that the meaning conveyed by presentation and banquet scenes was similar. It could also help to understand the symbolism of the banquet, which remains obscure, in view of the fact that presentation scenes are much better read and interpreted.
