Untersuchungen zur kassitischen und assyrischen Herrscherchronologie vom 17. bis ins 15. Jahrhundert v. Chr.

Abstract

It is a well known fact that the relatively stable chronologies of Babylonian and Assyrian rulers start to become hazy in the late IS* century BC. Sources for the preceding two centuries are scanty, some seem to be contradicted by others, some have their reliability questioned by modern scholars. One of the latter is the so called Synchronistic Kinglist, deriving its name from the way it is presenting the Assyrian and Babylonian kings. This list could have been a major chronological aid if it had been preserved better - and if the scribe had made fewer mistakes while connecting the kings to one another. The article’s purpose is to shed some light on those passages of the list that are concerned with the Assyrian and Kassite kings earlier than the late 15th century. The investigation presented here is able to demonstrate that there is more than just a grain of salt to some of those synchronisms.
