Mission archéologique syro-française de l’Oronte Tell al-Nasriyah et Tell Massin: les sites quadrangulaires, nouveau regard. Rapport préliminaire sur les opérations des campagnes 2007-2008
Abstract
The work on two quadrangularsites on the right bank of the Middle Orontes, downstream from Hama, Tell al-Nasriyah and Tell Massin, was undertaken as a collaboration between the dgam and the University of Charles de Gaulle-Lille 3. The smaller site, Massin, is from around 1500 BC. The larger one, Nasriyah, dates from the Early Bronze IV to the Mamluk Periods. The objective of this research is the reconstruction of the natural and human environment, as well as the history and cultural relations between the two sites. The surrounding topography shows that both sites are atypical, and early results of the geophysical investigations have led to interesting insights into questions concerning their populations. In 2007-2008 work was undertaken in three excavation areas at Nasriyah, one on the acropolis, two in the lower city. In 2009-2010 Nasriyah was excavated further, while a surface exploration was carried out at Massin. Although the function of these quadrangular sites still remains unclear, the comparative study of the different destinies of such very small and very large examples located at the doors of Hama and not very far from the Middle Bronze royal city of Qatna has proved to be very revealing.
