Herrschaftstitulatur des Könige von Susa und Anšan

Abstract

The Elamite royal title reflects the constellation of power in a vast region in south west Iran. An alteration in the usage of the royal title from the end of the third to the second millennium BCcan be noted. In this time we can consider the appearance of a new form of title which manifests the supremacy of the king over the different regions of Elam. Ebarat named himself as the “king of Ansan and Susa”. His successor Idaddu I bears the title “king of Simaski and Elam”. The two different combinations of regions do not mean that they reigned in diverse territories. Both combinations must be synonymous. Also the sukkalmah rulers like Kuk-nasur III, Tan-uli and Temti-halki named themselves as rulers of “Elam and Simaski”, although they were without doubt from Susa. If the title “king of Ansan und Susa” had the same meaning as the title “king of Simaski und Elam”, subsequently Ansan must be identified with Simaski and Susa with Elam. In one case the regions are mentioned, in another case the capital of these regions. In the Middle Elamite Period this fact was also obvious in the title “king of Susa and Ansan”. It was necessary to mention both locations in order to indicate the ruler of the empire. In contrast the title “king of Ansan” or “king of Susa” specified only the governor of these cities. Imazu was the king of Ansan in the period of the reign of his father Kindattu. Sirtuh was the king of Susa as Kutir-silhaha was ruler. Temti-raptas had the same position in this period and Kuduzulus II in the reign of Kuk-nasur IV. Also from the Middle Elamite Period we know kings of Ansan, Huhnur and Halisrati in the reign of Tepti-ahar. Most probably also Insusinak-sar-ilani was also only the king or governor of Susa as his title indicates.
