The Use of Military Standards by Old Babylonian Armies
Abstract
The main purpose of this article is to analyze textual data in order to ascertain the role played by the standards in the Old Babylonian armies. Most authors have granted the standards used during battles a symbolic or ideological function. However, given the context where they were used (complex war), it is more reasonable to assume that they played a role which was primarily tactical.
