Il controllo urarteo della valle di Gürpinar

Abstract

The plain of Giirpinar was one of the most important areas under the control of the Urartian Kingdom. Although we find there archaeological traces of Minua’s age, such as the Semiramis canal, the final arrangement of the area must be ascribed to Sarduri II, with the construction of the great center of Cavustepe/Sarduril)inili. During an archaeological and epigraphical survey in this area between July 29 and August 15 2008 we visited some sites belonging probably to this period. These are : the Qermik road station on the modern highway which connects Van with Hakkari ; the artificial lake with a little dam near the Urartian fortress of Eski Norgiih, known by local people as Timur basin, and the village of Kasir, where there are some worked limestone blocks. The centrality of this area for the Urartian political administration is proved by the fact that Rusa III, probably during the last years of his kingdom, implemented the water resources of the area, by means of the realization of impressive hydraulic works.
