Enemies ... A Love Story. Personal Warfare on Old Babylonian Letters

Abstract

The corpus of Old Babylonian letters depicts a rich variety of everyday situations in both the private and professional life of Old Babylonian individuals. Within this group, many Old Babylonian letters inform us of personal conflicts: small and trivial neighbours’ quarrels as well as serious and extensive clashes. This article gives an overview of the different sorts of personal conflicts and their possible solutions found in the Old Babylonian letters : remonstrations concerning unfulfilled deliveries and obligations, disputes concerning territory and property, claims for damage, juridical affairs, divorce, heritage, etc. Every kind of personal conflict is illustrated by a particular case.
