Excavations on the Acropolis of Mishrifeh, Operation J. A New Early Bronze Age III - Iron Age III. Sequence for Central Inner Syria. Part 1: Stratigraphy, Chronology and Architecture
Abstract
The excavations on the summit of the central mound of the Mishrifeh (ancient Qatna) upper city were undertaken in order to provide a more solid basis for the relatively and absolutely dated archaeological sequences from Central Inner Syria. As a result a (nearly) continuous archaeological sequence was established and, for the first time, a stratigraphic sequence spanning over two thousand years was absolutely dated. A sequence was found extending from the Early Bronze Age III to the Iron Age III (c. 2800-535 BC) as well as some glimpses of early occupation of the site during the Late Chalcolithic 4 (c. 3300-3000 BC). This sequence, spanning over two millennia was further absolutely dated by means of radiocarbon dating. This makes Mishrifeh a reference site for the Northern Levant.
