Forced real estate sales in Babylonia - ca. 2000 - 1600 BCE

Author

Abstract

This article focuses on sales of fields, orchards, and houses for northern, central, and southern Babylonia during the Isin-Larsa/Old Babylonian period (2004-1595 BCE), with the goal of identifying forced sales. The first part of the article establishes criteria for identifying a forced sale. The second part assesses the impact of forced sales on the prices of houses, fields, and orchards. It is argued that a significant proportion of real estate sales were forced, which depressed mean prices of real estate.
