Abstract

In the present article the author shows how the correct understanding of the Assyrian Distanzangaben sheds new light on some problems of Assyrian chronology. The re-introduction of a statement in the Armenian version of Eusebius suggests that the Assyrians based their calculations on a completely preserved king list of the Khors./SDAS type. It is demonstrated how the combination of the Distanzangaben with the pre-Assyrian phase of Samg-Adad I is able to identify the eclipse of 1838 BC as the na'dur dUTU in MEC. This result allows us to conclude that REL is 2 years too short and the High Middle Assyrian Chronology is probably correct. At the same time the result demonstrates the connection between the eclipse, the 199 eponyms and the 56 regnal years of Samgi-Adad I.
