Re-Identifying the Hiptunu Town and Andaruttu Mountain

Abstract

This paper deals with Hiptunu town and Andaruttu/Andarutta Mountain. These two Iron Age toponyms are located in the Northern Zagros. Both Hiptunu town and Andaruttu Mountain are recorded in the Assyrian and Urartian texts. Due to the lack of any excavation at the Iron Age sites in the area between Arbail and Musasir, the location of most of the toponyms is still poorly understood and hesitantly identified by scholars. Using my knowledge as a local archaeologist, with experience of field work in this area, and on the base of the ancient and the medieval travelers' records, I shall try to re-identify both. toponyms. In my opinion the results of this study prove that they were identified incorrectly.
