Observations on the military activity at Iri-Sagrig

Abstract

The clandestine discovery, rescue and subsequent publication' of the archives of the city of Iri-Sagrig(2) constitute a substantial addition to the documentation for the reigns of the last three kings of the Third Dynasty of Ur(3). This is reflected particularly in the new data on the activities of the royal family, royal messengers, and local government and foreign officials. In addition, these sources provide substantial new details on Iri-Sagrig's military organization and history, as well as insights into the economic, social, and religious dimensions of the local administration and its representatives, both domestic and foreign. Together, these new data provide perhaps the most wide-ranging evidence for a Sumerian/Babylonian city discovered so far(4).
